04 Days – PEEK TO BHUTAN

Upon your arrival in Paro, take the time to acclimatize to the weather conditions. Visit the following places in Paro:

1. **Paro National Museum:** Shaped like a conch shell and completed in 1656, the museum offers an excellent overview of Bhutanese history and culture. It houses the largest collection of artifacts, textiles, and antiques in Bhutan.

2. **Paro Dzong:** This fortress stands high over the Paro Valley, serving as a landmark in Bhutan. Construction was initiated in 1644 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, and it stands on the foundation of a monastery built earlier by Guru Rinpoche.

3. **Paro Dungtse Lhakhang:** This little three-storied chorten-shaped temple, built in 1421 by Thangtong Gyelpo, is unique. It is said to have been constructed to subdue an ogress. The temple’s paintings depict the progressive stages of Tantric Buddhist philosophy and important deities of the Drukpa Kagyudpa School.

In the afternoon, travel to Thimphu. Upon arrival in Thimphu, you have the option to visit the following places:

1. **Buddha Dordenma:** A gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue celebrating the 60th anniversary of the fourth king. The statue houses over one hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues.

2. **Thimphu Chhodzong:** Thimphu’s fortress, a prominent architectural structure with historical significance.

Stay overnight in Thimphu at Hotel Tashi Yoedling.

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Punakha. The journey takes you across the Dochula Pass (10,230 ft), adorned with 108 Bhutanese chortens and prayer flags. Pause on the pass for tea and, weather permitting, enjoy breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayan peaks. Descend from the pass through enchanting pine and rhododendron forests, offering glimpses of Bhutan’s picturesque countryside.

On the way to Punakha, visit Chimi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, known as the “Divine Madman.” This temple is also revered for fertility blessings, and it is believed that couples praying here are blessed with children.

Proceed to Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten, a regal shrine built to promote peace, stability, and harmony. The chorten commands stunning views of the Punakha Valley and the peaks of Gasa. You have the option to hike back down, following ancient riverside trails amid whitewashed farmhouses. Along the way, visit Punakha Dzong, strategically located at the confluence of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, serving as a religious and administrative center.

Experience walking on the Punakha Suspension Bridge, the longest in Bhutan at 160 meters, offering stability and scenic views of the river and valley.

Overnight in Punakha at Hotel Meri Puensum.

Early in the morning, after breakfast, embark on a journey from Punakha to Paro, specifically to the base of Taktsang.

Taktsang Lhakhang, or the Tiger’s Nest, is Bhutan’s most iconic and sacred site. Perched 900 meters above the Paro Valley on a sheer cliff face, this temple has a rich history. Legend has it that Guru Rimpoche, flying on the back of a tigress, meditated in a cave at the site in the 7th century A.D. for three years, three months, three days, and three hours to subdue evil demons. The cave remains a sacred site, attracting many saints over the years. To reach Taktsang, visitors must trek for about 2-3 hours through beautiful pine forests.

After the awe-inspiring visit to Taktsang, explore Paro Kichu Lhakhang. Built in 659 by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet, it holds down the left foot of an ogress whose body covers Bhutan and much of Eastern Tibet. Kichu Lhakhang is considered one of the most spiritual places in Bhutan.

In the evening, take the opportunity to explore Paro town.
